Amelia Ham, a third-year equine veterinary student at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, is the inaugural recipient of the $5,000 Dr. Tom Riddle Theriogenology Scholarship. Managed through The Foundation for the Horse, the endowed scholarship was established in 2022 by friends, colleagues, and clients of the retired co-founder of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

Ham accepted her award December 8, 2024, during the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) 70th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida.

The Dr. Tom Riddle Theriogenology Scholarship rewards a veterinary student at a college of veterinary medicine in the United States, Canada, Caribbean, or Europe for their academic excellence in their school and AAEP student chapter, and their long-term goals in theriogenology. Applicants must also have the support of AAEP members and their clinical instructors.

Tom Riddle, the son of a veterinarian, was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1974 and the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. In 1982, he partnered with Dr. Bill Rood to form what is now Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, which has grown to encompass the original hospital and a veterinary pharmacy in Lexington as well as satellite hospitals in Saratoga Springs, New York, and Wellington, Florida.

Riddle has served as president of the Kentucky Association of Equine Practitioners, the Society for Theriogenology, and the Theriogenology Foundation. He received the Steiner Award for Excellence in the Practice of Theriogenology, and he is an honorary member of the American College of Theriogenologists. He recently earned 2024 Distinguished Educator – Mentor Award from the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
