Brittney Carney, an outstanding third-year equine veterinary student at Tuskegee University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was awarded the $5,000 Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Scholarship during the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) 70th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida, on December 8, 2024. Carney earned this prestigious award for her academic excellence, leadership abilities, and commitment to pursuing a career in equine practice.

The scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Ed Hagyard, the first graduate veterinarian to establish a practice in Kentucky. Leading up to their sesquicentennial, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, a leader in equine veterinary care for nearly 150 years, created this perpetual scholarship to support third-year veterinary students dedicated to careers in equine medicine.
