Robert J. MacKay, BVSc, PhD, DACVIM

Dr. Robert MacKay is an internationally recognized equine clinician, researcher, and educator whose career has helped shape the understanding and treatment of complex internal diseases in horses. With a foundation that spans continents and decades of academic leadership, his work has influenced both the practice of equine medicine and the education of those who carry it forward.

Dr. MacKay earned his Bachelor of Veterinary Science from Massey University in New Zealand before pursuing advanced research and earning his PhD at the University of Florida. He went on to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, reflecting his expertise in large animal internal medicine.

As a longtime faculty member in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. MacKay built a reputation for clinical excellence, paired with a deep commitment to teaching. His areas of expertise include the diagnosis and management of complex immunologic, metabolic, neurologic, and systemic disorders in horses. His research contributions have been equally impactful, with involvement in numerous studies—including work on equine anhidrosis and other metabolic conditions that continue to inform veterinary care today.

Dr. MacKay has also played a key role in advancing veterinary knowledge through his writing and editorial work. As a guest editor for Veterinary Clinics of North America: Equine Practice and a contributor to leading resources such as the MSD Veterinary Manual, he has helped distill complex medical concepts into practical guidance for veterinarians around the world.

In recognition of his contributions, Dr. MacKay was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Florida in 2019 and was named Professor Emeritus of Large Animal Medicine—an acknowledgment of his lasting impact on both the institution and the profession.

Through courses in equine medicine, clinical clerkships, and specialized topics such as cardiovascular disorders, Dr. MacKay has guided countless veterinary students and young professionals. Known for his thoughtful teaching style and depth of knowledge, he has helped shape generations of equine veterinarians, instilling both clinical rigor and curiosity.
