Richard L. Giacopuzzi, DVM

Dr. Richard Giacopuzzi has built a career grounded in hard work, innovation, and a deep understanding of the horse industry from every angle. Raised in a ranching and dairy family in Canoga Park, Calif., his path into veterinary medicine began long before veterinary school—working as a racetrack groom and gaining firsthand experience in the daily care and management of performance horses. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis, in 1979 and went on to co-found Humphrey, Giacopuzzi & Associates Equine Hospital in Somis, Calif.

Over the course of more than three decades, Dr. Giacopuzzi has become one of the most respected veterinarians in the field of equine reproduction. Known for his expertise in breeding management, he has helped countless mare and stallion owners achieve success, particularly in challenging cases involving sub-fertile mares. His thoughtful, solutions-oriented approach has made him a trusted partner to breeders, navigating both routine and complex reproductive needs.

Dr. Giacopuzzi has also played a key role in advancing reproductive technologies within equine practice. He was instrumental in expanding the use of cooled and frozen semen programs, helping make these options more accessible and practical for horse owners. Through the development of structured “breeding packages,” he improved both the efficiency and accessibility of reproductive services and helped establish a dedicated reproductive center within his practice—further strengthening the level of care available to clients.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Giacopuzzi was known for his extensive ambulatory large animal work, providing care across rural communities and reinforcing his reputation as a veterinarian willing to go wherever he was needed. That same commitment has carried through his entire career, shaping both his clinical work and his leadership within the practice.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Giacopuzzi has remained engaged in the advancement of his field through his involvement with the Society for Theriogenology and his continued participation in the American Association of Equine Practitioners, where he has been accorded Honor Roll status.

Known for his depth of knowledge, practical insight, and willingness to share both his medical and business expertise, Dr. Giacopuzzi has influenced countless colleagues and young veterinarians. His dedication to not only practicing reproductive medicine, but continually advancing it, reflects a career committed to progress, service, and the long-term success of the horse industry.
