Larry R. Bramlage, DVM, MS, DACVS

Dr. Larry Bramlage is an internationally recognized leader in equine orthopedic surgery whose work has shaped the way veterinarians diagnose, treat, and manage injuries in performance horses. A graduate of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, he went on to earn his Master of Science from The Ohio State University and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Dr. Bramlage began his career in academia as an associate professor of equine surgery at The Ohio State University before transitioning to private practice. In 1989, he joined Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., where he became a partner and one of the foremost surgeons caring for racehorses and sport horses.

His contributions to equine medicine are both extensive and enduring. Dr. Bramlage played a pivotal role in the development and refinement of internal fixation techniques for equine fractures and was a pioneer in advancing arthroscopic surgery for horses. He is widely recognized for developing the fetlock arthrodesis procedure, a life-saving technique that stabilizes severe fetlock injuries. Through more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, his research has significantly advanced modern orthopedic surgical techniques, improving diagnostic capabilities, surgical outcomes, and recovery prospects for equine athletes.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bramlage has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as president of both the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He has also served as chair and board member of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. His contributions have been recognized with many of the industry’s highest honors, including the Jockey Club Gold Medal, the ACVS Founders’ Award for Career Achievement, the ACVS Legends Award, and the AAEP Distinguished Service Award, among others.

Dr. Bramlage has trained countless interns, residents, and surgeons—many of whom have gone on to become leaders in equine veterinary medicine. Through teaching, lecturing internationally, and publishing his work, he has generously shared his knowledge to advance the field. He has also helped educate the broader public as an AAEP “On Call” veterinarian, offering expert insight on equine health during nationally televised events such as Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
