Eleanor M. Green, DVM, DACVIM, DABVP

Dr. Eleanor Green is a trailblazing leader in equine veterinary medicine whose career has been defined by innovation, service, and a steadfast commitment to advancing the profession. An internationally respected clinician, educator, and academic leader, she has shaped veterinary medicine at every level—from private practice to the development of entire veterinary colleges.

Dr. Green earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University. She began her career as a practice owner before transitioning into academia, where she quickly distinguished herself as a leader and visionary. Over the course of her career, she has held faculty and leadership positions at multiple institutions, including Mississippi State University, the University of Missouri, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Florida—often serving in roles where she was the first woman to lead large animal clinical departments and teaching hospitals.

She has continued to shape the future of veterinary education. Following her tenure at Texas A&M, she served as the founding dean of the Lyon College of Veterinary Medicine, where she led the development of an innovative, forward-thinking program designed to prepare the next generation of veterinarians. More recently, she was named an adjunct professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University, where she works alongside her husband, Dr. Jim Heird, to help create and sustain an innovative equine veterinary education program that prepares uniquely trained equine veterinarians.

A double board-certified specialist in large animal internal medicine and equine practice, Dr. Green has contributed extensively to clinical medicine, research, and professional advancement. She has also demonstrated exceptional leadership across the profession, serving as president of four major national organizations—the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, and the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians—breaking barriers as the first woman to lead several of these organizations.

Beyond her clinical and administrative accomplishments, Dr. Green has been a driving force for innovation and inclusion within veterinary medicine. She established the first Office of Diversity at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and helped launch the Veterinary Innovation Summit, creating platforms that continue to influence the profession today.

Known for her visionary thinking and unwavering support of others, Dr. Green has inspired countless students, colleagues, and leaders across the industry. Her work reflects a deep belief in the power of education, collaboration, and forward momentum to strengthen the veterinary profession and the care of the horse.
