Angus O. McKinnon, BVSc, MSc, DACT, DABVP

Dr. Angus McKinnon is an internationally recognized leader in equine reproduction whose career has spanned clinical practice, academia, and global education. With a foundation rooted in both research and hands-on application, his work has helped advance reproductive management and improve outcomes for horse owners and breeders around the world.

Dr. McKinnon earned his Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Melbourne in Australia in 1978 before continuing his training at the Ontario Veterinary College, where he received his Diploma in Large Animal Medicine in 1980. His early career included academic appointments as an assistant professor in large animal medicine, surgery, and reproduction, followed by his work at Colorado State University, where he served as both assistant and associate professor in equine reproduction and field services.

In 1988, Dr. McKinnon co-founded Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Australia, establishing a practice that would become known for its strength in both clinical care and reproductive services. His primary expertise lies in equine reproduction, including mare reproductive management, diagnostic ultrasonography, and advanced problem-solving techniques for complex fertility cases.

A respected educator, Dr. McKinnon has delivered numerous continuing education lectures and webinars on topics such as mare fertility challenges, Doppler ultrasonography, and the management of twin pregnancies. He has also made lasting contributions to veterinary literature, most notably as co-editor of Equine Reproduction, a comprehensive and widely referenced textbook that continues to guide practitioners and students alike.

Dr. McKinnon’s professional achievements include Diplomate status with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and the American College of Theriogenologists, reflecting his depth of knowledge and commitment to advancing the field.
