James D. Smith, DVM

Dr. James Smith built a distinguished career defined by clinical excellence, leadership, and a lasting commitment to advancing equine veterinary medicine. As a senior partner at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky., he played a pivotal role in shaping one of the most respected equine practices in the country.

A graduate of Kansas State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1958, Dr. Smith went on to establish himself as a leader in equine reproduction and ophthalmology. He gained national and international recognition for his expertise in breeding soundness evaluations and the management of fertility challenges, helping horse owners and breeders achieve successful outcomes across a wide range of cases. His clinical skill also extended to equine ophthalmology, where he contributed to the diagnosis and treatment of complex eye conditions in horses.

Dr. Smith’s influence reached far beyond his practice. As a consultant both nationally and internationally, he participated in symposiums and wet labs, sharing practical diagnostic and treatment techniques with fellow veterinarians. His willingness to teach and collaborate helped elevate standards of care across the profession.

Throughout his career, Dr. Smith held numerous leadership roles, including as secretary-treasurer of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and as president of the Kentucky Equine Practitioners Association. His contributions were recognized with many prestigious honors, including the E.R. Frank Award for Meritorious Service, the Pew Award for Racing Commissioners, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Kansas State University, and recognition in the Registry of Merit from the American Quarter Horse Association. He was also honored as a Kentucky Colonel, reflecting his impact within the state’s equine community.

Known for his enthusiasm and encouragement, Dr. Smith trained and supported many young veterinarians throughout their careers. Through continuing education efforts and professional engagement, he helped foster both confidence and excellence in the next generation of equine practitioners.
