David D. Frisbie, DVM, PhD, DACVS, DACVSMR

Dr. David Frisbie is a nationally recognized equine surgeon, researcher, and leader whose work has helped redefine the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disease in performance horses. As a professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, his career has been marked by a commitment to advancing both scientific discovery and clinical application.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Frisbie completed a surgical internship at Cornell University followed by a surgical residency and master’s degree in joint pathobiology at Colorado State University, where he later earned his PhD. He joined the faculty at Colorado State in 1999 and has since progressed to full professor, contributing extensively to both research and education.

Dr. Frisbie is a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, as well as a founding fellow of the ACVS Minimally Invasive Surgery program. His clinical and research focus centers on orthopedic surgery, lameness, and innovative treatments for joint disease, including the development and evaluation of biologics such as stem cell therapies and gene-based approaches.
Throughout his career, Dr. Frisbie has played a key role in advancing equine sports medicine through both research and practice. He has been involved in developing novel diagnostic techniques, including standing arthroscopy procedures, and has contributed to translational research efforts that benefit both equine and human medicine.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Frisbie has demonstrated significant leadership within the profession. He has served on the board of directors for the American Association of Equine Practitioners and was selected as the organization’s vice president in 2018, ultimately serving as AAEP president in 2020. His contributions to the association’s educational programming earned him the AAEP President’s Award, reflecting his dedication to advancing continuing education within the field.

Dr. Frisbie’s influence extends beyond academia through his involvement in private practice and innovation. He is a partner in Equine Sports Medicine LLC and has played a leadership role in the development of the C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute at Colorado State University, helping shape a collaborative, forward-thinking approach to veterinary and biomedical research.
Through his work at Colorado State University and beyond, Dr. Frisbie has trained and guided veterinary students, interns, and residents, fostering the next generation of equine veterinarians. Known for his ability to translate complex research into practical application, he has helped bridge the gap between innovation and everyday clinical care.
