Scholarships Program

The Foundation for the Horse is dedicated to preserving and improving the health and well-being of equines by honoring exceptional veterinary students dedicated to equine practice through its Scholarship Program (PDF). The Foundation, along with multiple donors and partners in the industry, is poised to award over $500,000 in scholarships to individuals committed to equine practice.

Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to equine veterinary medicine and who are student members of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). Applicants must also have the support of AAEP members and their clinical instructors.

Available Scholarships

The scholarships offered this year range from $5,000 to $50,000 for third-year students and $75,000 for fourth-year students.

Eligibility Requirements
    • Currently enrolled and in good standing at an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine in the United States, Canada, or West Indies
    • On track to graduate with your DVM (or equivalent) in 2027 or 2028
    • National AAEP Student Member paid through 2027 and active within your school’s chapter. To renew your membership and obtain your member ID, contact Megan Gray, member concierge, at (859) 705-0421 or mgray@aaep.org
Timeline
    • The application opens April 1 of the respective year, via the online link below, when actively accepting applications.
    • Applications and all required materials must be submitted via the online application portal by May 15.
    • All applicants with fully completed and submitted applications will be notified by September 1. Notifications are sent via email. Note school email servers tend to mark these communications as spam.
    • If selected, you will need to sign a commitment form and other benchmarks, before awards are processed.
Selection

Scholarship finalists and recipients are selected on the basis of:

    • Academic performance
    • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
    • Equine Veterinary experience
    • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
    • Veterinary Practitioner recommendations
    • Essays – See below

Financial need is not considered.

How to Apply

The Foundation uses a single online application to collect and review all scholarships based on your graduation year. Eligible students will need to submit the following:

    • Applicant Information
    • Current Transcript (official transcript not required, but it must include all courses to date)
    • Resume or Curriculum Vitae
    • List of Externships
    • Essays – please reference the Instructions for Students (PDF)
    • References 
      • Clinical Academic Instructor – a faculty member that can evaluate your clinical skills and academic performance
      • Private Practitioner – an AAEP member, working outside of the university setting
        Note: the Coyote Rock Ranch scholarship also requires a personal reference. Please provide the Instructions for Scholarship References (PDF) when requesting their support.
