Submit an Abstract

This symposium hosted by The Foundation for the Horse will be held at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida, USA, on March 9-11, 2027.

The deadline for submission of abstracts for the meeting is October 11, 2026, at midnight EST.

The meeting format will be similar to previous Colic Research Symposia. Twelve-minute oral presentations followed by three minutes for questions and discussion will take place in sessions throughout the two-and-a-half days of the meeting.

Posters will be available for attendees to view throughout each day. Poster sessions on March 9-10 will expand beyond the oral presentations by giving attendees the opportunity to review and discuss with poster presenters.

Scientists and clinicians are invited to submit abstracts of recent work, including abstracts published after January 1, 2026, that they wish to present at this meeting. The scientific committee will consider abstracts on all aspects of equine gastroenterology, including basic science research and reports of clinical cases or novel approaches to treatment.

Abstract submissions are due October 11, 2026, at midnight EST.

The submission portal will close promptly, and late submissions will not be accepted. Abstracts will be reviewed by the organizing committee, and authors will be notified by email of acceptance as either an oral or poster presentation by November 30, 2026.


Abstracts must be saved as a Microsoft Word Document (doc or docx) in a PC-compatible format. The filename should contain the presenting author’s first name, middle initial, and last name. If more than one abstract is submitted by the same author, please number accordingly.

Guidelines for abstract submission:

  • Title (12-15 words)
  • All authors should be listed together with their addresses in full. The presenter’s name should be underlined.  Papers with more than three authors are cited as et al. If different from the presenter, the corresponding author should be indicated and their email address included.
  • A summary, no more than 300 words, in English, single spacing, in 12 pt, Times New Roman font.
    • The 300-word limit applies only to the summary (abstract) itself.
    • The title, author names, and affiliations, are separate elements and are not included in the 300-word count.
  • Figures and tables should be included only where absolutely necessary.
  • Abstract summaries should contain the following headings:
    • Background: The background behind the decision to choose this subject to study
    • Objectives: The statement that is being tested and is testable by the methods (below); or the original aims and study deliverables
    • Study design: Concise statement of the study design
    • Methods: Brief description of materials and methods, and methods of testing hypotheses
    • Results: Brief highlights of the results obtained
    • Main limitations: Concise statement of limitations and sources of bias
    • Conclusions: Conclusions drawn from results
  • Note: Do Not include references within your submitted abstracts.
  • Authors must indicate if the submission has been published and where, and whether the presentation is for:
    • Oral presentation only
    • Poster presentation only, or
    • Suitable for either oral or poster presentation

Authors considering submission of research papers to refereed journals based on the same information in a submitted abstract should be aware of the allowable length of abstracts by each journal to prevent a conflict with the abstract and future planned manuscript publication. In addition, be mindful that some journals will not accept submission of papers where figures or tables have been previously published in an abstract.

Volvulus nodosus of the small intestine: differences in foals and adults

Abstract

Background: Volvulus nodosus is a strangulating lesion of the small intestine described only in foals and in just one case in older horses. Huskamp and colleagues described the pathophysiology of volvulus nodosus in foals, but to date there is no description of the pathophysiology of volvulus nodosus in adults.

Objectives: To describe the different features of volvulus nodosus in adult horses and in foals.

Study design: Clinical case series.

Methods: Analysis of the clinical and anatomical features of two foals and three adults presenting with volvulus nodosus.

Results: Clinical presentation between foals and adults differed mainly for the mild or absent pain showed by older horses. Clinical and ultrasonography findings were similar. At surgery or necropsy we found anatomical differences between adults and foals. In adults the volvulus did not involve the mesentery that instead forms a hernia sac in foals. Further, in adults, there was no involvement of the ileum, but two loops of jejunum resulted in one wrapped around another in all three cases. After accurate analysis of one case at necropsy, we found that in adults one loop acts as a “post” around which another loop turns around. The weight of this loop then causes the formation of a half-hitch formed by the two loops and their mesentery. This cause strangulation and necrosis of two separate tracts of jejunum.

Main limitations: Small number of cases included.

Conclusions: Volvulus nodosus may occur in adult horses with significant differences compared to foals. Knowing the presentation and pathophysiology of volvulus nodosus may help equine surgeons to resolve selected cases of small intestinal strangulation in adult horses.
