In May 2025, The Foundation for the Horse awarded its first Equine Care Grants, distributing a total of $62,500 to 25 equine adoption, rescue, retirement, and therapy facilities. Each grant of $2,500 is designated for essential needs such as feed, hay, veterinary services, and farrier care.
This new grant program was made possible by a generous gift from Pennsylvania horse owners and equine advocates Robert “Bob” and Toni Mallet in 2023. The Equine Care Grants mark the beginning of several innovative funding initiatives made possible through the Mallets’ support, all aimed at improving the well-being of at-risk horses nationwide.
In addition to the financial support, this year’s recipients also benefited from vaccine donations, thanks to the ongoing partnership between the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and Merck Animal Health. Previously known as the Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign (UHVRC), the program provided 7,000 core vaccines to 237 facilities across 38 states and Puerto Rico.
Since its inception 17 years ago, the vaccine program has helped protect over 100,000 horses in all 50 states, reinforcing a long-term commitment to equine health and welfare.
