Scott A. Hay, DVM

Dr. Scott Hay earned his DVM from Kansas State University in 1988. After spending a few months as a staff veterinarian at Ottawa Veterinary Clinic in Ottawa, Kansas, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to work with Teigland, Franklin, and Brokken, DVMs.

Hay is now the president and managing partner of the business, focusing on horse racing and the treatment of racetrack thoroughbreds. His primary interests lie in lameness evaluations and purchase examinations. Hay particularly enjoys consulting with and advising clients on their potential purchases at thoroughbred auctions.

Hay has had a lifelong interest in horses and veterinary medicine. His late father, Dr. William Hay, who earned his DVM at Kansas State in 1952, was a veterinarian in Ottawa, Kansas, who raised and raced American Quarter Horses. Scott shares his father’s passion for racing American Quarter Horses and as a teenager competed with their horses in roping events at local rodeos.

Hay has held numerous positions with the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), including as president in 2021, a stint on its board of directors, serving on the Professional Conduct and Ethics committee, as chair of the Racing committee, and being the facilitator of the Purchase Examination at Public Auction Forum.

In addition to his involvement with AAEP, Hay is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Florida Veterinary Medical Association, and Florida Association of Equine Practitioners. He has also served on the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Advisory Committee and as the co-chair of the Racing Medication Testing Consortium’s Scientific Advisory Committee.

He was the recipient of Kansas State’s 2012 Alumni Recognition Award.

Mentee Comments

Dr. Scott Hay presents a great example of how a mentor can be mentored. His demeanor when managing difficult situations is definitive and instructive. A superb partner in business, his decisions are always with a level head and a look to the future. Scott instills confidence in younger veterinarians in the practice through his leadership and example. He is extremely ethical and is dedicated to the effort to improve veterinary practice at the racetrack. Indeed, I have learned from Scott.

– Ben Franklin Jr., DVM

The Kansas wind usually originates from the west with arching trees and tumbleweeds heading east. Luckily, that is exactly what happened to the young Kansan- Dr. Scott Hay who joined the practice of Teigland, Franklin, and Brokken (TFB Equine). Quietly folding into the group practice environment, Dr. Hay was always a willing contributor and leader. As the practice continued to expand with new, young staff and various new practice locations, Scott soon became the leader of TFB Equine with added responsibilities from management to hiring new employees. New veterinarians were gradually folded into the practice and with Scott’s quiet and steady work ethic he was never too far away and always available to help out or fill in and guiding those who needed assistance.

Scott and I practiced together for many years and still work together when needed. I have seen him be kind, forgiving and driven to mentor those around him, including partners, employees, and owners. A great friend!

– Thomas D. Brokken DVM

Scott’s impact on my career is immeasurable! He has always been highly respected by both clients and colleagues, and he is known for his skill and practicality. He makes me want to continually grow my own practice as a veterinarian. Ever the leader, Scott checks his ego at the door and selflessly helps build the entire practx`ice and bring younger veterinarians into the fold. I am proud to call him my mentor and even more proud to call him one of my best friends.

I remember my first day at the racetrack when Dr. Hay told me the three most important mistakes to avoid. I think by the end of the day I had made all of them and one extra. I will forever be grateful for his patience and mentorship as a new veterinarian.
