Duncan M. Alexander

A Vietnam veteran who served with honor in the United States Army, Duncan earned his degree from Colorado College in 1968. His journey in veterinary medicine began in 1981 when he became president of American Live Stock Insurance Company and Harding and Harding. Under his leadership, the companies expanded their operations to all 50 states, Australia and South Africa. This growth allowed him to become deeply involved in medical research and scholarships at veterinary schools and through the AAEP and its foundation. During this time, he also became involved in ranching operations in the Rockies, as well as the breeding and racing of horses.
Mr. Alexander’s extensive experience includes 30 years of service on the board of directors of Aurora Bearing Company and directorships with the Trust Company of Illinois, the AAEP, the AAEP’s Foundation Advisory Council, the Gluck Equine Research Foundation at the University of Kentucky, the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley and the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.
In 2024, in recognition of his years of financial and volunteer support to the AAEP and The Foundation for the Horse (formerly the AAEP Foundation), The Foundation named its highest giving circle level in his honor. His philanthropic endeavors include awarding more than 220 scholarships to equine veterinary students over two-plus decades, as well as supporting equine research, the EDCC and other mission impact areas through The Foundation for the Horse.
In 1997, he was honored with the AAEP’s George Stubbs Award, given to a non-veterinarian not working in veterinary medicine who has performed acts that benefit the field of equine veterinary medicine.
