Disaster Relief Grants

Dr. John Madigan and students examine a horse affected by wildfires in Sonoma County, California.
Program Purpose
The Foundation for The Horse supports horses in crises through Disaster Relief Funds that deliver rapid, targeted aid after natural disasters. These programs focus on getting emergency resources to veterinarians and reputable equine groups on the ground so affected horses receive feed, shelter, and veterinary care as quickly as possible.
The Foundation works directly with veterinarians who are members of the American Association of Equine Practitioners to coordinate direct needs when communities are impacted by natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, hurricanes, and tornados that threaten equine welfare. In addition, The Foundation collaborates with and provides grants to institutions and programs that train veterinarians, veterinary students, first responders, and others on how best to manage equine care before and after natural disasters.
Awards
-
Typical support includes emergency veterinary care, medications and supplies, temporary housing support, and critical feed or water access for displaced or injured horses.
-
The Foundation often underwrites coordinated response efforts (e.g., staging veterinary teams, purchasing feed and fuel, supporting mobile clinics) instead of operating its own field teams, so local responders can scale their work.
Eligibility
-
During disasters, The Foundation invites applications from equine veterinarians, state or regional response coordinators, and recognized equine welfare organizations who can document need and capacity to deliver aid.
-
Awards are typically small to mid-sized rapid-response grants, designed to be deployed quickly with streamlined reporting so relief can begin while conditions are still evolving.
